The basis of a platform is in its extensibility. One may think about a platform as the foundation of a common home. Some people may build three stories on the home; some may just put tarps over the platform and use it at its base level.

Two great examples of platforms are Salesforce and Google Maps. Each allows the extension of the initial technology, making it more useful to more people in more situations.
